The Benefits of a Vegetarian Diet as an Adjunct to Cancer Treatment

Being diagnosed with cancer can be one of the most difficult and sobering moments in anyone’s life. The anxiety, uncertainty, and prospect of lengthy and debilitating treatment are some of the worries a cancer victim may experience. However, each day new treatments are being discovered and survival rates continue to rise.

Any cancer patient, whether just diagnosed, in active treatment, or in remission, will look for lots of ways to improve their overall health. Things such as exercise, meditation, and a healthy diet are all excellent adjuncts to any treatment.

When considering a healthy diet, a vegetarian diet is an excellent choice for many reasons. To begin, fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat. Studies show that a diet, which is low in fat and high in fiber, can prevent certain types of cancers.

Since the low fat, high fiber nature of fruits and vegetables has been shown to reduce the rates of various types of cancer; it certainly makes sense to eat a vegetarian diet when dealing with the disease. Simply eating a high fiber, low fat diet is a good idea in any situation and makes sense when dealing with something as devastating as cancer.

A vegetarian diet is also beneficial in helping to deal with many of the side effects involved in cancer treatment. Mesothelioma treatments and treatments for many other cancers are physically exhausting and can even cause other illnesses. It is important during this time to be able to maintain one’s strength and energy.

Fruits and vegetables have long been known to provide abundant energy. This is especially true of fruits, which provide a quick boost of energy in addition to other health benefits. Having the extra energy that a vegetarian diet provides may allow treatment to continue without the interruption that is sometimes necessary when a patient becomes too weak to continue therapy.

Aside from the important physical health benefits, there are also mental benefits. Many people dealing with cancer vow to fight the illness. There is no better way to fight a health threat than by making a change to a healthy diet. It signifies the ability to control part of one’s own recovery. It creates a positive sense of wellbeing in the knowledge that everything possible is being done to combat the cancer.

Another psychological benefit can be weight loss. It is known that overweight and obese individuals are at a higher risk for cancer. If an overweight person develops the disease, weight loss may be recommended. For those who need to shed pounds in order to assist in their recovery, a vegetarian diet is a perfect solution. Just seeing a healthier looking self and reaching a healthy weight can be elating and can help take the mind off of the sometimes arduous treatment.

But what about those who have completed their treatment and are in remission? While there may be a temptation to return to meats, staying vegetarian will not only provide the benefits already mentioned, but will be an excellent way to keep the immune system at peak performance. This will help with overall wellness but is especially important in cancer survivors, as their immune systems need to be operating at optimal levels to help prevent recurrence.

Doctors and other health professionals will do their best to help, but helping oneself by adopting a healthy vegetarian lifestyle is perhaps the best adjunct treatment a cancer patient can use. It will provide a better quality of life, help with the side effects of treatment, and be a personal way to take the fight to this devastating illness.

 

Living Raw vs. Eating Raw June 23, 2012

Im sure your hear of a raw food diet quite often, and have friends that are switching over and eating raw. With that comes the people who state how they were once raw, but felt either “too restricted” or “it was too much work”. These are the people who EAT raw.

Then there are the people who LIVE raw. Living raw is so much more than what you eat and put in your mouth. LIVING RAW is doing just that—- every aspect of your life is raw.

When a person switches to a raw food “diet” just for the reason of loosing weight, or for a reason similar, that is most likely all they will get from it. When you make the shift to a raw lifestyle, everything shifts in your life. This does not happen to everyone who decides to go raw, it all depends on the reason for your shift and what you decide to get from it.

When i first began to shift, i noticed a blind fold fall off my eyes. My thoughts were more in order, and i began too see things as they were. You begin to notice and receive the energy people and things give off, and when they do not mesh with your own energy your feel the need to drop it. This scares a lot of people. I know of people that have ended incredibly long relationships because when the shift happen their eyes were open to truth.

When you shift, you begin to notice nature in a different way. You don’t see it. You feel it. You will walk past a tree and feel its energy. “Tree hugging” will be a more realistic term than ever! You will make a connection to plants like you have never had, you will be able to have conversations with animals, and when you touch the earth you will feel the energy pumping out of it. The connection with your food will change, and the connection with the people around you will. There was a time period in my life where i could not leave my home in the woods for more than an hour because i felt so out of touch in the city. Now, that i am forced to live on a busy street with no trees (only until october praise God) i noticed my own energy deplete and my connection to the earth start to diminish. It saddens me greatly, but soon i will be back to the normal me.

The people who make the shift raw are the ones that will stay this way. Those who just eat raw will most likely not.

I am asked all of the time if i feel restricted. My answer is always that i am in fact liberated, and have never felt so free. You see, i am not shackled to processed food, and i have no chains holding me down from be enlightened. My body and mind are pure, they are one. I have never felt “I can’t eat this because it is cooked”, when i see cooked vegetables, i see sad, dark colored vegetables who have had the beauty cooked out of them. I see no life, and do not want to put something sad and lifeless into my body because i myself do not want to feel that way. I have no desire to eat those particular items. I see processed, store bought, cooked foods as a chain, as a cloud, that will only keep me from soaring.

While some may understand this and some may not, when you are at the height of living raw, you feel as though you are soaring on eagles wings….high…free…. and never coming down. Eagles belong soaring free, not trapped in a cage.

I am writing this article because I want those who may be considering to live this life to think about it. Think about if you want to eat raw, or live raw. There is a huge difference. If you decide to live the life, know that major changes WILL happen, and you have to be ready for them. It may be hard to let some of these things go, but let it happen, and soar high.

Everyone has a certain diet that they are on, whether it be the SAD (standard american diet), a raw food diet, or whatever it may be, we all have a certain lifestyle choice that we choose.

It seems that most people have gotten away from what eating a healthy diet if for. We are supposed to be eating for our bodies, so that they come to life, feel great, and function properly. somewhere, in the midst of wanting what is only the best, we have gotten this obsession with weight. People seem to always be eating healthy just to loose weight and stay at a certain “ideal” number that they have in their head.

Health does not equal weight. everyone’s body has a different shape and size. It is important to first love your own body, and learn to do so through feeding it the proper things. How many of us wake up in the morning and weigh ourselves? Upon arising your fist thought should be “How do i feel today?” not “What number am I?” We should never identify ourselves as a number. And remember when asking yourself “how do I feel?” that FAT is not a feeling. Do you feel healthy? Are your joints working perfectly? Is your body aching? Are you clear minded? Eat towards feeling whole and healthy, not towards a number.

When we begin to shift our diets and concentrate only on weight, we can lose sight on why we are actually eating the way we are. It can actually become unhealthy as it adds stress into your life, and can actually cancel out the healthy foods you have been eating.

Don’t fall in the trap and try and fit in a cookie cutter image of a tiny person who wears extra small everything. Don’t go on a “diet” or eat healthy because you want to fit this image. Eat right because you love yourself, and you want to treat your body with respect. Look in the mirror and tell yourself “I love you”. Show off the curves you have. You are beautiful, and your beauty will never be ranked on what size pants you wear, or what number the scale tells you. Are you beautiful on the inside? If your organs were on the outside of your body would be be just as beautiful?

Beauty starts on the inside and works its way out. Don’t be obsessed with anything, including exercise. Only put in your body what is the best for it. Love every inch of you, and smile at yourself every day. The healthier relationship you have with yourself the healthy your body will become mentally and physically.

 

 

Should I be Eating 100% Raw? March 27, 2012

I get asked this question almost on a daily basis. Many people come to me wanting to adapt a raw food lifestyle, but feel like they have to go 100% or they will not get the benefits of this way of life. They also have this idea that there are “rules” they must follow.

If there are rules to the way you eat, you should not be doing it.

My response to this question is always “How raw do YOU FEEL you should be?”

There are no rules to this way of life. When you start to bring in healthy foods you will automatically start to move out bad ones. The more raw foods you begin to eat, the better and better you will begin to feel. Your body will automatically begin to tell you to eat more and more of those foods. The healing your body will begin to go through will only make you want to include more raw and super foods into your diet. You should never feel restricted. If you are looking at a dish of pasta like you really want it, but are denying yourself because “you can only have raw foods”, you’re producing more stress on yourself, which will cause your health to deplete, the exact opposite of what you want. Eat the dish of pasta, you will feel the difference in your body afterwards and will most likely not return to eat it again.

It is never good to do something in absolute extreme, and there is no same rule for everyone. Where 100% raw may work for me, it may not work for you, and it is important to understand that. You should never feel restricted. A raw food lifestyle is completely liberating, and it should always feel that way.

Pay attention to what your body wants. Listen to it after you are done eating. Is it satisfied? Does it feel energized? The more in tune with your body you become, and connect with it as one, the more you will know what you should and should not be doing.

 

The Atkins Diet February 6, 2012

So, i thought this diet had lost popularity, but more and more people are asking me about low carb eating and many people are still seeking this method of weight loss. I thought i would cover the topic and explain this diet more clearly.

 


            The Atkins Diet is a fad diet that swept the nation in the 1990’s. People were claiming to lose all sorts of weight very quickly and effectively. Atkins meal replacement bars hit the shelf and soon they had a line of pastas and bread mixes. When taking a further look into this plan, you see that the reason people are losing weight so rapidly is because the body is entering Ketosis, a condition where the body enters a fat burning state rather than its normal carbohydrate burning state, which will later be discussed. I went to the Atkins website to do some further research on their diet, what was allowed and not allowed, and what their phases contained.

The Atkins diet, developed by Dr. Atkins, (there is no information about Dr. Atkins on the website)  is a diet that causes rapid weight loss (with claims of up to 15lbs in two weeks) due to the restriction of carbohydrate and the increase of protein and fat. Our body runs off of burning carbohydrates, so when you severely limit their intake, your body has no choice than to burn another form of energy, in this case,  fat. This made me a bit weary as to the fact you are forcing your body to do something it was not meant to do. The mission for this diet just seems to give people the instant gratification that they look for in weight loss. Most of the claims on the website just say they will help you lose weight incredibly fast and keep you in a fat burning mode all of the time. Looking at this statement from a person with no knowledge of health terms they see: “I will be able to burn fat forever”, when actually this quote is saying “We will keep your body in ketosis.” This was the first thing on the website I noticed was a little off.

Upon entering the website you are asked to calculate your BMI. Mine was 23.17, which is average for my height and weight, however when I said I want to lose 10 more pounds, I was put into phase 2 or “OWL” (Ongoing Weight Loss) of the diet. There are four phases of the Atkins diet. Phase one is Induction, where you “kick start” weight loss with up to 15lbs the first two weeks. This is where you “turn your body into a fat burning machine” by limiting your diet to 20 net carbohydrate per day with unlimited amounts of protein and fat, with the encouragement of high fat foods are encouraged such as cream and cheese. Phase two, the one I was selected for is Ongoing Weight Loss, which limits your consumption of carbohydrates to 25g of net carbohydrate per day. During this phase you are now allowed to consume some nuts and seeds, some berries, some legumes, and some tomato and vegetable juices. Phase 3 is pre maintenance. You can move to this goal once you have only 10lbs left to lose. You are encouraged to add ten grams of carbohydrate every week or two, until you notice cravings or hunger returns then you are supposed to step it back ten grams. You are allowed to eat squash, peas and carrots, some whole grains, and some fruits. Phase 4 is Lifetime Maintenance. This is when you are at your goal weight and you now know how many carbohydrates your body can tolerate before becoming hungry or gain weight. The guidelines are the same as Phase 3.

The first thing i noticed is that there is no limit  on caloric intake listed anywhere on this site. I am in no way an advocate of counting calories, but when you are eating a diet so high in saturated fat it is not OK to consume endless amounts of calories as long as it is from animals.  The diet plan makes it seem as if you could eat 5,000 calories a day if you wanted as long as you do not go over your carbohydrate limit for your phase. Protein is the second factor. This diet completely goes over the top with protein. Some of their meal recipes have 50 grams of protein in one serving. With no limits on intake a person can be consuming a meal that high 3 times a day plus the protein offered in their snack bars! When it comes to fat, it is highly promoted. Foods that are incredibly high in fat are pushed. “Safe” snack recipes consists things like “Chocolate Butter cream” that have 8 tablespoons of butter and 19g of fat. Meals include recipes like Cheddar Bacon Soup (51g of fat) and Deep Fried kale (56.5g of fat). If an individual was to consume those two meals and that dessert they have consumed 126.5g of fat, and this does not include their last meal or snacks. This is incredibly high, especially since it is mostly saturated fat. Getting GOOD, HEALTHY fats is important. To eat a diet so high in artery clogging fat scares me to death!  When it comes to carbohydrates, the website seems to tell you to fear them. Limiting your fruit intake because fruit is “bad” just seems outrageous to me. Most fruit (except hybrid fruits–seedless ones) contain minerals and fiber essential to our well being. To completely cut out groups of food like this is insane (unless you have candida or another illness.) This diet also seems to be lacking in vitamins and minerals as well as variety. While the claims in the FAQ state that the diet does allow you to eat a variety, with such a limited list of foods you can consume there is no way this can be proved possible. Also, with the limitation of fruit and the small list of vegetables you are able to consume, and pretty much no grains in the beginning, there is going to be a severe lack of vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function.

I would in no way EVER recommend this diet to anyone. To limit intake on fruits and vegetables but eat endless amounts of saturated fats and proteins seems incredibly unsafe and irrational. There is no balance to this diet. You are putting your body in an unnatural, dangerous state just to loose a couple pounds. Is it worth it?  I urge you, if you are considering this diet, to rethink it and research things such as ketosis before starting this diet.

 

 

Raw Foods: Healing Disease, Diabetes, Cancer, and Fighting Obesity February 1, 2012

To forewarn, this post is quite long, but i suggest reading it in entirety. Most of your raw food questions will be answered, especially those on ailments.

 

In today’s world we are dealing with many diseases and epidemics that we never once had to deal with. We seem to be downgrading as a society, with cancer, diabetes, and heart “disease” running rapid. We need to find the source of these problems. All of these issues can be traced back to the same dysfunction: Diet. Diet causes these issues, and diet can cure it. A diet high in vitamins and enzymes, as the Raw Food Diet, will tend to these issues. A diet that consists mostly of raw foods allows an individual to not only obtain optimal health, but gives the body everything it needs to fight off the sickness and disease our society faces today.

Raw Foods, by definition, are foods that have not been heated or processed in any manner and consist solely of whole foods such as nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables. Temperatures of these foods should not exceed 118 degrees Fahrenheit, and dehydration temperatures should be kept below 104.  The point of this is to keep all enzymes and nutrients intact so your body may receive all they have to offer. By processing and cooking foods, many important enzymes are destroyed and nutrients deteriorate that your body needs to defend itself and keep itself in good health.

Hippocrates once said, “Let thy food be thy medicine, and let thy medicine be thy food”. This is a statement that no one really lives by and many truly do not understand its meaning. Our food contains natural medicine, something we should all be consuming on a daily basis. When we are consuming our medicines, our bodies have what they need to heal what is wrong and fight off what is trying to take us down. For instance, wild lettuce (lettuce that has not been domesticated, you cannot find this in the grocery store) contains a milky white sap in the veins of the leaf that is considered a natural opiate. This sap does not actually contain any chemical compounds known as opiates, but it works in the body as one, activating the opiate receptors in your brain. Native Americans used the sap as pain relief. If we are consuming these foods, they will be present in our body and therefore we will be able to use them when our body needs it. By domesticating food, we have taken most of the wild and medicinal properties out of it. We have altered food in a manner so that it will produce different mutations of the same vegetables so we think we are eating a variety. When’s the last time you’ve seen wild cabbage? While we are consuming foods that have no natural medicines in them, we must rely on other properties that can aid in our healing; the natural living enzymes and nutrients found in the food now available.

“Enzymes are substances that make life possible. They are needed for every chemical reaction that takes place in the human body. No mineral, vitamin, or hormone can do any work without enzymes.  Our bodies, all our organs, tissues, and cells are run by metabolic enzymes.” (Howell, 1985) There are three types of enzymes found; digestive, metabolic, and food. Digestive enzymes are present in your alimentary organs and help to digest your food when it enters your body. They consist of protease (protein enzyme) lipase (fat enzyme) and amylase (carbohydrate enzyme). The metabolic enzymes are found in all organs, cells, and tissues in our body and are a part of every function they utilize. Food enzymes help to digest the food when it is eaten, or decompose itself if not eaten. Food enzymes are only present in whole, raw foods, and are found within their proper portions. Over time, from food enzyme shortages from cooking our foods, disease and degeneration starts to occur. This happens because the digestive enzymes become deficient since they have no other enzymes helping them, and the body must pull from the metabolic enzymes in order for digestion to take place. It takes ten metabolic enzymes to create one digestive enzyme. (Wolfe, 2002) Years of robbing your organ’s and gland’s enzyme reserves rob you of your vitality and longevity. Many people may argue against this stating that they have been eating cooked food their whole life and their body seems to be adapting just fine. This is simply not true. The average lifespan we used to live was 100+ years, now we are dying much sooner at an “old” age of 65 or 70. People are dying of heart attacks in their 40’s and cancer is running rapid in higher numbers than ever. David Wolfe states in his book The Sunfood Diet Success System “Just because one can chew up something and swallow it and live to tell others about it, does not mean that person has adapted to it. White bread, for example, has only been around for the last 100 years. People eat white bread en masse and they are still alive. Does this mean humans have adapted to white bread? Cooked and processed foods have accumulative effect on the body. The enzyme potential decreases over time.” He uses the example of a field mouse. If you were to catch a mouse and put it in a cage and fed him a completely cooked food diet, sure he would live, but not to his fullest potential, or the length of life it should have. The mouse has not simultaneously adapted to a cooked food diet when no one in his history has ever consumed a cooked food diet. He will suffer the consequences. Dr. Howell, in his book Enzyme Nutrition goes on to explain “Humans eating enzyme-less diets use up a tremendous amount of their enzyme potential and lavish secretions of the pancreas and other digestive organs. The result is a shortened life span… illness, and lowered resistance to stress of all types, psychological and environmental.”

 

A living, high enzyme, raw food diet was consumed by humans for perhaps 3.2 million years. When a giant shift in our society occurred and we switched to farming and herding, our culture began to inherit a diet that consisted of animal product and grains. Until this time, we were never consuming animal flesh on a daily basis. According to leading medical anthropologists, before this time period we ate the diet of a chimpanzee, consisting of raw plant foods, and the occasional bite of meat here and there. (Cousens, 2008)

The three main types of people that turn to raw food for healing are those with diabetes, cancer, or are overweight.

Diabetes is a chronic, degenerative disease which is caused by insulin deficiencies. This is due to the body becoming incapable of producing normal insulin levels or becoming resistant to insulin. The cells of the individual’s body will resist insulin’s attempt at regulating blood sugar levels. (Trudeau, 2011) This is very dangerous, and is becoming more and more common among the American population. The traditional medical approach to “treating” (more like ‘covering up symptoms of’) diabetes is medication and dietary restrictions, especially foods high in sugar, even fruit. There are countless numbers of testimonials that can be found on the internet of individuals reversing their diabetes through a raw food diet. There seems to be this misconstrued obsession that diabetics need to fear fruits and carbohydrates and eat more meat and dairy products to gain more protein so that they can reduce insulin spiking. This is incredibly untrue. In Dr. Gabriel Cousens’ book, “There Is A Cure For Diabetes: The Tree of Life 21 Day Program” refers to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition where they state “Cheese and beef elevate insulin levels higher than ‘dreaded’ high carbohydrate foods like pasta.” and “A single burger’s worth of beef, or three slices of cheddar cheese, boost insulin levels more than almost two cups of cooked pasta.”

There are countless testimonials available on the internet where individuals state their success on treating and curing their diabetes with a raw food diet. When you begin to again consume the food we were meant to eat in their living unprocessed form, our bodies begin to repair themselves. When eating a plant based raw food diet, you are automatically consuming a lower calorie diet that is high in fiber and low in saturated fat. Fiber helps to regulate the release of glucose in the body which is crucial to diabetics, since their insulin is not able to react to the glucose and keep the levels normal. Sergie, a person who healed his diabetes with a raw food diet found that when he would eat fruit whole (not in a juice extraction) or blend it in a green smoothie, his blood sugar would barely raise, if at all.  (“Healing testimonials”, 2011)

The enzymatic content in living foods also help the body with food breakdown as mentioned earlier, so the body no longer needs to steal the enzymes reserved in the pancreas. Insulin, being a hormone, needs metabolic enzymes for functioning, as does the pancreas. Ceasing the robbery of these enzymes will enable the pancreas to bring back its proper functioning and heal itself.

Another issue in our culture that tags right along with diabetes is the obesity epidemic. With so many people doing special things for “weight loss”, it being a multi-billion dollar industry, we seem to just be getting fatter. Everyone you meet is on a diet of some sort, whether it be counting calories are eating low fat foods, and the book stores have entire sections dedicated to weight loss. It doesn’t seem to be working, does it? It seems that people think there is this ultimate formula to weight loss, as if there is some secret that needs to be discovered. When you look back at our ancestors, they were not overweight. There is nothing here to be discovered. Obesity is on the rise not in the decline, despite the many new “revolutionary” dietary weight loss guides.

It has been found that the majority of overweight people have issues in producing digestive enzymes. (Trudeau, 2004) With low digestive enzymes your body is not able to use your food for fuel and it just gets stored in your body as fat. It is virtually impossible to become overweight on a raw foods diet. When you are NEVER consuming any food additives, your body can actually break down and process everything you’re putting in your body. Eating foods that we have been eating since the beginning of time are recognizable by our body and they can be processed and utilized. Consuming foods with preservatives and highly processed substances, like high fructose corn syrup, that is processed using mercury (yes, mercury), that has only been introduced to our bodies in the most recent years, simply just become stored in the body and begin to build up. The foreign substances we consume have no use in our body, yet sit there and do nothing, only hurting us and debilitating our bodies from performing as they should. As stated earlier, our bodies have three enzymes to attack proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. We don’t have Potassium-Bromate-ase or Aspertame-ase. (These two food additives are also known to produce cancer in animals.)

Consuming large amounts of fruits and vegetables not only provide us with an abundance of fiber which is essential for our intestinal health, but it provides us with amazingly high amounts of essential vitamins such as A, B, C, D2, E, and so on. Fruit such as watermelon contain high amounts of iron, and vitamin C, the ultimate immune booster and cure all can be found in incredibly high amounts Camu Camu Berry, Acerola Cherry, Rosehips, and Bell Peppers.  Consuming beneficial fats found in raw nuts and seeds contain no saturated fats, but are high in essential fatty acids, Omegas 3,6, and 9. The raw food diet consists of no cholesterol consumption, and the calories consumed are actually usable for the body. Vegetation contains more bioavailable protein than animal products, as the body must turn everything into a liquid before it can be utilized. What do we need to turn our foods into a liquid? ENZYMES. What would require more enzymes to break down, raw kale, or cooked steak? Besides the higher nutrient content in the kale as well as the ease of digestion due to high enzymes, the protein is more digestible. Kale is a great protein source and is used by many raw body builders. (Wolfe, 2002) Many people do not look to vegetation for protein and are coaxed into believing that we need meat for protein. Gorillas, hippopotamus’, giraffes, cows, and zebras all get to be their incredible size and weight on raw vegetation. The cows we consume get their protein from grass.

When your body has what it needs vitamin and mineral wise, and is back to functioning appropriately, you will find that it will begin to heal itself. The body is supposed to completely replace itself every seven years, meaning total healing of all scars and damaged organs. When everything is running as it should, there is nothing blocking it from doing its job, and we are not robbing our enzyme reserves, our bodies will fully heal itself.

In 1904, 1 out of 24 Americans obtained cancer in their lifetime. Today, the cancer rate is 1 out of 2 men and 2 out of 3 women. (Kelley, 1998) This means that over half our population will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life. This is obviously an epidemic, and nobody is doing anything to look into prevention, rather they are dumping millions of dollars into pharmaceutical research on some kind of silver bullet that will “kill” cancer. Prevention makes no one money, and therefore is not looked into. There is a giant taboo on healing cancer naturally in our society, and there have been reports that people have been mandated to receive chemotherapy against their will. This is such a corrupt and political system, that Dr. Max Gerson, and his daughter Charlotte Gerson were forced to bring their holistic cancer healing center to Costa Rica, where they are allowed to freely execute their practices.

The Gerson Institute has healed many people of their cancers and various other ailments with the use of raw vegetable juices, lightly warmed vegetable broth soups, and whole raw foods. There are strict guides in the beginning of the treatment; with a diet that consists of mostly raw vegetable juices many times a day and coffee enemas.

To understand how this can possibly cure cancer we must first understand how cancer works. We all have cancer cells. In order for cancer to come up on a test, the cells must multiply to a certain level, when they begin to break down other cells and degrade them. Cancer loves acidic environments and feeds on sugar. The typical state of the average American: acidic. What do they mostly consume? Sugar. We put our bodies in the exact environment cancer needs to succeed.

Dr. Max Gerson found that potassium, a vitamin found in vegetation acts as an enzyme catalyst. He also found that pancreatic enzymes act in attacking tumor tissue. Since our pancreatic enzymes go towards digesting our foods, particularly the insanely large amount of protein we consume, it cannot properly attack foreign and unwanted tissue. Restoring the pancreas to full function, allowing its enzymes to do their jobs, will alone help in the cease of cancer.

When you are not consuming sugars of any kind, or eating foods that cause acidity or fermentation like dairy or meat, cancer cannot live. You are starving it. When pH levels are at 8.5+, cancer cells cannot live. (“Stop the cancer” 2011). Gerson therapy is built on this concept, and also provides the body with mass enzymes and absorbable nutrients through juices. When an individual consumes vegetation with no fibers attached, as an unpasteurized juice, the nutrients are immediately delivered into the body, within 10-15 seconds. With this rapid deliverance of essential nutrients and enzymes, the body is able to utilize and deliver everything the food has to offer. With this happening many, many times as day as in the Gerson therapy, it is no wonder that they have such glorious outcomes the past 65 years.

In Hunza, a small country found in Pakistan, where living to the age of 120 is normal, has yet to discover cancer, along with many other ailments the rest of the world deals with. People who visit the land find men 80 and 90 years old rebuilding roads and playing vigorous sports that “would even make hockey players shutter” (alk.com) What is their key to success other than vigorous exercise? The average Hunzan consumes a little more than 1900 calories a day, with only 50 grams of mostly plant based protein, 36 grams of fat (also plant based), and 364 grams of unrefined, unprocessed, complex carbohydrate. This is compared to the average American, who consumes 3,300 calories, with 100 grams of protein, 157 grams of fat, and 380 grams of carbohydrate. (USDA) Everything the Hunzan people consume is untouched and unsalted, and plants are left untouched by chemicals. (It is actually illegal to spray pesticides.) The Hunzan people live on an organic, raw food diet. (Kinderlehrer, 2011)

It is clear that there is enormous benefit to eating a raw food diet. It keeps excess weight away and is amazing for weight loss, it prevents and heals diabetes and cancer, and as we see in the Hunza people, it promotes longevity and well being. This is how we ate for millions of years. To just push these eating habits aside and go with what the mainstream is doing is literally killing us. We are dying younger and younger and developing chronic ailments at very young ages. We are seeing small diabetic children, along with those that are suffering with cancer. We need to start looking into prevention. We are obviously doing something very wrong in our society that disease is running so rampant. We make the choice everyday when we decide to eat. Am I going to eat something that benefits me, something I should be eating, or am I going to eat something that is going to kill me. Meal Replacement For Weightloss January 29, 2012

The number one thing i get asked is “What is a good meal replacement?”

There seems to be this belief that if you skip meals and eat less you will loose weight. Many people, mostly women, come to me complaining that they are hungry all the time and need a bar or protein drink to replace a meal. Some of them come to me with Dr.’s telling telling them to use snickers marathon bars to replace meals. There is something wrong here, and we need to first break this down.

First, recognize the fact that you are hungry as your body telling you you need to eat. Our bodies give us signals and we are supposed to recognize them and tend to them to make that signal or symptom go away. Our body doesnt just do this when it is hungry, but in many other ways. When we break out on certain areas of our faces it is because certain organs are not functioning. Everything happens in our body for a reason, and when things aren’t running smoothly the body will give you a symptom.

When it comes to eating food, our brains will never tell you you are full until you get the nutrients it desires. You can eat a huge bag of chips and still be hungry, but could not get through a bag of greens the same size, you would be full a lot sooner. If you are hungry all day long, and are NOT an active person, it is because you are not eating nutrient dense food and your body is trying to find what it is lacking. If you are constantly hungry and an active person, you are simply burning off what you are eating and need to eat more. This is not something that you should ignore.

Secondly we need to understand that skipping meals will NOT make you lose weight. It will in fact make you GAIN weight. Your body does not know that you diet. When you are scarcely eating and skipping meals it things that there is no food. You need to remember where and when our bodies were designed. We were gatherers, We would walk the earth searching for our food, and sometimes had to go without. Our bodies would recognize this, and hold on to every calorie we put in our mouths, so that we would not starve. You body works the same today. When you skip meals and do not feed your body when it needs it, your body will start to store calories. This will cause weight gain. Doing this day in and day out, your body will be in a constant storing mode.

When you consistently eat through out the day  your body knows it is always going to have food, therefore it will just burn what you consume and will let go of the calories. Eating 6 small meals a day will keep your metabolism functioning. Try this:

When you wake up drink a big glass of purified water or a fresh green juice. Continue on with a well balanced breakfast. This is normally when i have my big green smoothie. Around two hours later, have a snack on a piece of fruit or a small bag of soaked nuts like almonds. I love snacking on apples. If you are more comfortable with a protein bar eat a very clean one, like one from Garden of Life, that is cold processed. Then enjoy your lunch. Try and keep it high raw. If you are eating a sandwich use Ezekiel bread or even a Portobello mushroom! Fill it with raw things like avocado, mushrooms, fresh peppers, greens and tomatoes. A few hours later enjoy another light snack. Enjoy your dinner, again with a high raw veggie content. Enjoy a nice dessert like chocolate avocado pudding!

Losing weight happens naturally when you give your body what it desires and you tell it there is a plentiful amount of food around. Please dont starve your body from what it needs and listen to it. It is speaking with you for a reason.

 

Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired? March 23, 2011

Today it is a common thing to walk around feeling crappy. From runny noses, to sluggishness, to cancers, we all walk around like this is a normal part of life. Like this is something we are meant to be feeling. It becomes a part of our routine.

How many of us grab a cup of coffee in the morning in order to wake ourselves up, and have another at around 12 to keep ourselves going? How about around 2:30 when your crashing and grab that red bull? Americans walk around trying to constantly keep themselves going, often with tissues in their pocket and Nyquil on their bed stand.

THIS IS NOT NORMAL! All though this has become a norm in our society, this is NOT how the body is meant to behave. We should wake up feeling energized and ready to take on the day, with that same energy continuing all through the day. You shouldn’t be blowing your nose or be “fighting something off” all day. You should feel great all day every day!

Let’s think about this. Most of us have not so labor intensive jobs. We sit in front of computers, deal with customers, answer phones, etc. Back some years ago, in “Little House on the Prairie” days, everyone worked on farms. Everyone had labor intensive jobs, waking up at 4 to milk the cows and chucking bales of hay all day. There was a lot to be done.  They did this seven days a week. How did they have the energy to do this all day? Well, they most definitely were not running off of a Mcdonald’s Sausage Egg McMuffin breakfast.

The SAD (Standard American Diet) is exactly that. Sad. For most of us breakfast is considered going through the drive thru, eating a donut at the office, or perhaps nothing at all. This is what we are breaking our fast with! Sugar, sugar, sugar, or processed, processed, processed! This is causing an immediate spike in your blood sugar and in about 30 minutes a severe crash downwards! For those of us eating the microwaved breakfasts… think of all the processed ingredients our body is now trying to break down… with no help. The enzyme deficient food you are eating is sitting in your stomach trying to break down all of these chemicals, not knowing what to do with them since these are foreign to the human body, and not meant to be put in it! Here’s where you start to feel sluggish. The body now stores these chemicals as toxins, which causes weight gain, brain fog, acidity, and disease.  Those of us who ate that bacon or sausage with breakfast, once the stomach has finally broken this down 3 hours later, it is now sitting in the intestine, will it will remain fermenting for the next few days until you are finally able to pass it.

And we are just at breakfast.

We should not be sick. This should not be our diet. Unfortunately I’m sure 90% of you can read these above paragraphs and say “this is my day”, and this is why we are all sick!

You can change this! Start really thinking about what you’re putting in your body. It’s the perfect time to start! Make this year’s Spring Cleaning about cleaning out your body! Make a goal for ultimate health, and to feel 100% everyday!

Take small steps!

Here are some tips for you to start!

Keep your blood sugar stable.

  • This means never letting yourself be hungry and eating proper foods! We should be eating every 2-2.5 hours to keep our metabolism running. The first mistake people make is not eating in fear of weight gain. This is dangerous and wrong. You are shutting down your metabolism and telling your body to enter starvation mode, where it will hold on to every calorie in you give it. (I recently came across a story of a woman who weighed over 500lbs and ate only once a day!)  After you eat breakfast, in a few hours have a piece of fruit or…. Some chocolate! Yes! Chocolate! 25g of carbs worth of chocolate that is 75% or darker is an awesome way to keep you going… and it will NOT cause weight gain! Start enjoying your favorite foods and enjoy life!
  • Have balanced meals, not one over saturated with starchy carbohydrates. Put mostly veggies on your dish. Most of us go an entire day without seeing a leafy green! This is SCARY! Greens are very healing to the body! 20% of what is on your dish should be protein, not 60% like most of ours. Small portions of protein balanced out with a bunch of veggies and a small amount of carbs will keep you stable.

NEVER SKIP BREAKFAST!

  • This is so important! This is where everyone makes a huge mistake… do not start your day off running on empty! You will not get very far! Instead, start your day off with a nice big glass of water! I drink about 1 liter of water before I do anything. Start with a big 16oz glass and work your way up! Start your body hydrated instead of dehydrated and you will immediately notice a difference!
  • My favorite breakfasts are green smoothies. They are fast, easy, and you can drink them on the go! Throw some fresh fruit of choice into the blender with a few of your favorite veggies (Kale, spinach, Strawberry, Banana is a favorite at the café!) Add some cacao nibs for a nice chocolate crunch and some ice if you didn’t use frozen fruit. Experiment with these until you find your favorite and drink up!  Starting your day off with some awesome greens in an enzyme packed smoothie will keep you going throughout the day!

STOP counting calories and START reading labels!

  • We are in a calorie obsessed nation, and look where it has gotten us. People look for the lowest calorie options and put tons of chemicals into their body—all for what? To fit in a size 2? How about giving your body the best food ever and feeling great and not restricting yourself? The chemicals in these low calories meals are killing us and making us sick.
  • If you can’t pronounce it—put it right back on the shelf! When you eat whole fruits and vegetables and, well, REAL food, there is no sounding out words! Just simple ones we all learned in first grade! And these are the best ones for our bodies! Things it can actually use!!!

STOP FEELING GUILTY!

  • Most of us put ourselves on this guilt trip when we eat a “fattening” food. Don’t do this. We control our bodies… actually even down to our DNA… with our thoughts. Think positively about your food and be happy with what you are eating. When you’re eating chemically laden foods, yes this is difficult and you can’t feel good because your body doesn’t. But if you are eating healthy, and you have that piece of birthday cake, enjoy it! Feel happy you are eating it! It will not affect you in the same way as it would if you beat yourself up over it!

Eat Your Veggies RAW!

  • Most of us cook our veggies literally to death, killing everything they have to offer us.  Microwaving is obviously the worse, (you really should just get rid of it) it kills 99% of the enzymes and nutrients in the food and also chemically alters your food so your body can no longer recognize it as a fat, carb, or protein! Steaming is 2nd worse. I’m not sure where we got the idea that steamed veggies were good… maybe because it taste bland and people have this misconception that bland food is better for you. WRONG! If you’re going to cook your veggies, LIGHTLY fry them in a pan with some coconut oil. Make sure they are still crisp. Obviously, the best option is not to cook them at all! Marinating veggies and preparing them in different ways can be fun and tastyyyy!

Pump that Lymph!

  • Stretching everyday is something great to practice. It will help push toxins through thru body. The lymph system needs pumping as it does not move on its own. Stretching and exercise does this, and it is a must for a pure body! My favorite way to get mine going is with some stretches, jumping on the rebounder (an exercise trampoline) or jump rope! 5 minutes of jump rope is equivalent to a 20 minute jog!

 

I can keep going on and on, but I guess I stop here… These are all great ways to start getting healthy and to stop walking around sick and tired! Start now! Raw Diet Biblically Correct? March 24, 2010

So i found this link posted on twitter, and it was very informative. I read the bible almost every day and am very familiar with the story of Genesis. i never really put it into perspective like this. I did often have thoughts about how when Adam and Eve were in the garden, they only ate plants and they were obviously not cooked. This guy goes to the extent and explains everything. Now, I am not saying he is correct, because there are other passages that proves him wrong, but he does make sense.

I know that ever since i started raw i have had the energy of a five year old and feel great. thinking about meat or eggs or anything makes my stomach literally upset, and not just because of what happens in the process. All i do is crave fruits and vegetables, which i have never done in my entire life. I have also lost weight for the first time. Now, i never have weighed myself and have never cared at all, but i wanted to make sure this diet was going to make me drop below my set point* body weight by being mal nourished. In the first few weeks i dropped 10 lbs, but am still incredibly healthy. What this means, is that my body was not at the weight it wanted to be so my metabolism boosted when i was eating what my body needed.

*(set point body weight is the weight your body desires to be at, and will increase or decrease your metabolism to stay at this weight. this is precisely why extreme dieting is bad)
