Stop for a minute. Think about who it is you take health advice from. Is it your doctor? An eating coach? Think about what this person looks like. Do they look healthy? Fit? Well put together?

On a daily basis I tell my clients: “Do not listen to ANYONE who is not obtaining results you want to see in yourself.

Time and time again I have people who come to me who are scared to take the next step because either their doctor or their health coach is telling them to do opposite of what I, or their own bodies, are telling them.

If you are going to a person because you want to lose weight, be fit, think clearer, and become more put together as a person, you have to first ask yourself: “Does the person I am listening to show these very things?”

I have to share this story with you:

My grandmother has a heart condition, and I have been telling her how to treat it for a year now. She is getting worse and worse, but  doesn’t listen to me because her doctor advises against what i have to say. I asked my grandmother what her heart doctor looked like. He is incredibly overweight. I asked her why she would take advice on her health from a man who was clearly very unhealthy.

Who are you taking your advice from? Are they vibrant and radiating? Are they healthy looking? Make sure you ask yourself this the next time you are listening to advice!

So, i thought this diet had lost popularity, but more and more people are asking me about low carb eating and many people are still seeking this method of weight loss. I thought i would cover the topic and explain this diet more clearly.

 


            The Atkins Diet is a fad diet that swept the nation in the 1990’s. People were claiming to lose all sorts of weight very quickly and effectively. Atkins meal replacement bars hit the shelf and soon they had a line of pastas and bread mixes. When taking a further look into this plan, you see that the reason people are losing weight so rapidly is because the body is entering Ketosis, a condition where the body enters a fat burning state rather than its normal carbohydrate burning state, which will later be discussed. I went to the Atkins website to do some further research on their diet, what was allowed and not allowed, and what their phases contained.

The Atkins diet, developed by Dr. Atkins, (there is no information about Dr. Atkins on the website)  is a diet that causes rapid weight loss (with claims of up to 15lbs in two weeks) due to the restriction of carbohydrate and the increase of protein and fat. Our body runs off of burning carbohydrates, so when you severely limit their intake, your body has no choice than to burn another form of energy, in this case,  fat. This made me a bit weary as to the fact you are forcing your body to do something it was not meant to do. The mission for this diet just seems to give people the instant gratification that they look for in weight loss. Most of the claims on the website just say they will help you lose weight incredibly fast and keep you in a fat burning mode all of the time. Looking at this statement from a person with no knowledge of health terms they see: “I will be able to burn fat forever”, when actually this quote is saying “We will keep your body in ketosis.” This was the first thing on the website I noticed was a little off.

Upon entering the website you are asked to calculate your BMI. Mine was 23.17, which is average for my height and weight, however when I said I want to lose 10 more pounds, I was put into phase 2 or “OWL” (Ongoing Weight Loss) of the diet. There are four phases of the Atkins diet. Phase one is Induction, where you “kick start” weight loss with up to 15lbs the first two weeks. This is where you “turn your body into a fat burning machine” by limiting your diet to 20 net carbohydrate per day with unlimited amounts of protein and fat, with the encouragement of high fat foods are encouraged such as cream and cheese. Phase two, the one I was selected for is Ongoing Weight Loss, which limits your consumption of carbohydrates to 25g of net carbohydrate per day. During this phase you are now allowed to consume some nuts and seeds, some berries, some legumes, and some tomato and vegetable juices. Phase 3 is pre maintenance. You can move to this goal once you have only 10lbs left to lose. You are encouraged to add ten grams of carbohydrate every week or two, until you notice cravings or hunger returns then you are supposed to step it back ten grams. You are allowed to eat squash, peas and carrots, some whole grains, and some fruits. Phase 4 is Lifetime Maintenance. This is when you are at your goal weight and you now know how many carbohydrates your body can tolerate before becoming hungry or gain weight. The guidelines are the same as Phase 3.

The first thing i noticed is that there is no limit  on caloric intake listed anywhere on this site. I am in no way an advocate of counting calories, but when you are eating a diet so high in saturated fat it is not OK to consume endless amounts of calories as long as it is from animals.  The diet plan makes it seem as if you could eat 5,000 calories a day if you wanted as long as you do not go over your carbohydrate limit for your phase. Protein is the second factor. This diet completely goes over the top with protein. Some of their meal recipes have 50 grams of protein in one serving. With no limits on intake a person can be consuming a meal that high 3 times a day plus the protein offered in their snack bars! When it comes to fat, it is highly promoted. Foods that are incredibly high in fat are pushed. “Safe” snack recipes consists things like “Chocolate Butter cream” that have 8 tablespoons of butter and 19g of fat. Meals include recipes like Cheddar Bacon Soup (51g of fat) and Deep Fried kale (56.5g of fat). If an individual was to consume those two meals and that dessert they have consumed 126.5g of fat, and this does not include their last meal or snacks. This is incredibly high, especially since it is mostly saturated fat. Getting GOOD, HEALTHY fats is important. To eat a diet so high in artery clogging fat scares me to death!  When it comes to carbohydrates, the website seems to tell you to fear them. Limiting your fruit intake because fruit is “bad” just seems outrageous to me. Most fruit (except hybrid fruits–seedless ones) contain minerals and fiber essential to our well being. To completely cut out groups of food like this is insane (unless you have candida or another illness.) This diet also seems to be lacking in vitamins and minerals as well as variety. While the claims in the FAQ state that the diet does allow you to eat a variety, with such a limited list of foods you can consume there is no way this can be proved possible. Also, with the limitation of fruit and the small list of vegetables you are able to consume, and pretty much no grains in the beginning, there is going to be a severe lack of vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function.

I would in no way EVER recommend this diet to anyone. To limit intake on fruits and vegetables but eat endless amounts of saturated fats and proteins seems incredibly unsafe and irrational. There is no balance to this diet. You are putting your body in an unnatural, dangerous state just to loose a couple pounds. Is it worth it?  I urge you, if you are considering this diet, to rethink it and research things such as ketosis before starting this diet.

So my parrot likes to hunt feet. A few days ago he was hiding in my herb cabinet, and when i went to put my jar away he decided to take a HUGE chunk of my toe out. I was going to share a picture, but i thought i’d spare you the gruesome photos.  It was taking a very long time to heal, as there is a pretty deep section of skin missing. I decided to make my own healing salve with ingredients i have home. I can not believe the results! My skin is quickly growing back and is healing great! I thought I would share the recipe with you!

 

-1 Small Aloe Leaf Fillet

-1/2 tbs Bentonite Clay

-1 quirt neem oil

 

Mash together all ingredients in your mortar and pestle and add to open wound. Cover with a band aid. Wash off before bed and allow to air out, depending on how deep the wound is.

The clay will draw out all impurities, the aloe will help rejuvenate and replenish, and the neem will kill off the bad bacteria!

 

Soak Your Seeds! January 30, 2012

Nuts are a staple in a raw food diet, and are a great form of healthy fats and protein, among other things. Most of us raw foodies know about the importance of soaking nuts before their consumption. Being that I always am recommending to people to consume nuts as snacks, i thought i would share the importance of soakings and how it should be done!

 

 

Nuts contain high amounts of enzyme inhibitors. These enzymes are present because they prevent the nut from sprouting prematurely. You may relate to this if you grow plants or are into botany, when you have to soak seeds overnight sometimes before they will start sprouting. These enzyme inhibitors will put a major strain on your digestive system if they are not first removed due to the fact that the enzymes will not become activated and it will be left solely up to your body to try and break it down. This is why most of us get stomach aches from eating raw nuts.  Soaking your nuts in warm water will neutralize these inhibitors and will increase the production of beneficial enzymes, leaving the food easier to break down and much easier to absorb the nutrients found in them.

Being a raw foodist, we are always speaking about how we must eat food in its original form, untouched. Through some readings, I found that when people would gather nuts or seeds (like the Aztechs) they would soak them in ocean water over night, and lay them in the sun to dry. This makes a lot of sense. I decided to try soaking nuts in a salt solution and just in warm water to see the difference.

Salt soaked nuts seemed to be even more easily digested than the water soaked ones! Soaking and dehydrating also seemed to bring out great flavor of the food!

 

Here is how your seeds/nuts should be soaked:

Pumpkin seeds/ Sunflower seeds

4 cups of raw seed/nut
2 tablespoons sea salt
filtered water

Soaking Time: 7 hours or overnight
Dehydrating time: 12-24 hours

Pecans/Walnuts

4 cups of nuts
2 teaspoons sea salt
filtered water

Soaking time: 7 hrs or overnight
Dehydrating time: 12-24 hours

Pecans and walnuts are more apt to go rancid and should be stored in an airtight jar in the refrigerator.

Almonds/Cashews/Macadamia nuts/Peanuts/Pine nuts/Hazelnuts

4 cups of raw nuts

1 tablespoon sea salt

filtered water

Soaking time: 7 hours or over night

Dehydrating time: 12- 24 hours

 

After you are done with your soak, be sure to rinse them very well! You will see that the soak water has become murky, this is what you want to get rid of!

Once you feel the difference in soaking your nuts you will always want to do it! If you dont want to dehydrate them you can store them in the refrigerator, but they will not keep for a very long time.

Before making milks or nutbutters be sure to soak them as well! It’s very important for ultimate digestion and absorption!

Almonds:

 

  • Vitamins B1, B2, and B3
  • High amounts of calcium (254mg)

The number one thing i get asked is “What is a good meal replacement?”

There seems to be this belief that if you skip meals and eat less you will loose weight. Many people, mostly women, come to me complaining that they are hungry all the time and need a bar or protein drink to replace a meal. Some of them come to me with Dr.’s telling telling them to use snickers marathon bars to replace meals. There is something wrong here, and we need to first break this down.

First, recognize the fact that you are hungry as your body telling you you need to eat. Our bodies give us signals and we are supposed to recognize them and tend to them to make that signal or symptom go away. Our body doesnt just do this when it is hungry, but in many other ways. When we break out on certain areas of our faces it is because certain organs are not functioning. Everything happens in our body for a reason, and when things aren’t running smoothly the body will give you a symptom.

When it comes to eating food, our brains will never tell you you are full until you get the nutrients it desires. You can eat a huge bag of chips and still be hungry, but could not get through a bag of greens the same size, you would be full a lot sooner. If you are hungry all day long, and are NOT an active person, it is because you are not eating nutrient dense food and your body is trying to find what it is lacking. If you are constantly hungry and an active person, you are simply burning off what you are eating and need to eat more. This is not something that you should ignore.

Secondly we need to understand that skipping meals will NOT make you lose weight. It will in fact make you GAIN weight. Your body does not know that you diet. When you are scarcely eating and skipping meals it things that there is no food. You need to remember where and when our bodies were designed. We were gatherers, We would walk the earth searching for our food, and sometimes had to go without. Our bodies would recognize this, and hold on to every calorie we put in our mouths, so that we would not starve. You body works the same today. When you skip meals and do not feed your body when it needs it, your body will start to store calories. This will cause weight gain. Doing this day in and day out, your body will be in a constant storing mode.

When you consistently eat through out the day  your body knows it is always going to have food, therefore it will just burn what you consume and will let go of the calories. Eating 6 small meals a day will keep your metabolism functioning. Try this:

When you wake up drink a big glass of purified water or a fresh green juice. Continue on with a well balanced breakfast. This is normally when i have my big green smoothie. Around two hours later, have a snack on a piece of fruit or a small bag of soaked nuts like almonds. I love snacking on apples. If you are more comfortable with a protein bar eat a very clean one, like one from Garden of Life, that is cold processed. Then enjoy your lunch. Try and keep it high raw. If you are eating a sandwich use Ezekiel bread or even a Portobello mushroom! Fill it with raw things like avocado, mushrooms, fresh peppers, greens and tomatoes. A few hours later enjoy another light snack. Enjoy your dinner, again with a high raw veggie content. Enjoy a nice dessert like chocolate avocado pudding!

Losing weight happens naturally when you give your body what it desires and you tell it there is a plentiful amount of food around. Please dont starve your body from what it needs and listen to it. It is speaking with you for a reason.

So its that time of year where we are all cleansing and ridding our bodies of last years toxins! My number one cleansing tip to you is to DRINK A TON OF WATER! Most people are very dehydrated, and if your cells do not have the proper amounts of water they have no way of flushing out… you will be keeping all those toxins inside!

Besides flushing out our bodies, we need to kill parasites as well. Parasites are little worm like creatures that live in your digestive system. They eat your food and cause major havoc in your body. Symptoms of parasites are:

-Cravings for white bread, flour, and sugar

-Cloudy mind

-Tiredness

- Never feeling full

-Always hungry

-Waking up around 2 or 3 am and feeling scratchy (this is when they are laying eggs)

 

So how do we get rid of them? Its easy. Just follow this recipe!

Ingredients:

-Wormwood (loose herb)

-Cloves (not ground)

-Black Walnut Tincture

-1 qt Purified or Spring Water

 

Brew 2 tablespoons of wormwood and 1 tablespoon of cloves in 1 quart of water. Steep it for 20 minutes and strain. Add 3 drops of Black Walnut Tincture.

Day 1: Drink 2 cups of tea

Day 2: Drink 3 cups of tea

Day 3-6: Drink 4 cups of tea (one full quart)

It is important to not miss a cup, and it does not need to be drank all in one sitting. It is quite bitter, but DO NOT add sweetener!

You should see parasite coming out by the second or third day, they will look like corn, grains of rice, or worms. You can drink a cup of this tea once a week for maintenance or drink a few drops of black walnut twice a week.

The Baobob Fruit! October 2, 2011

The Baobob fruit is mostly found in Africa, Madagascar, and some parts of Australia.  Known as “The Tree of Life” by most, this tree can live to be 2,000 years old. Talk about the tree of knowledge! The seeds of this fruit have been found stored in the Ancient Pyramids because the Egyptians believed them to have magical powers and were held in very high esteem, and for very good reason.

The Baobob fruit has a higher ORAC value than Acai, has a higher USABLE calcium than any other fruit, and is incredibly high in Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, fiber, and Vitamin C.  It is also an amazing prebiotic, so it can be consumed before a meal in order to aid with digestion.  Baobob is fairly low in sugar making it a great fruit for diabetics and those with blood sugar issues that still want to eat healthy fruits!    

So why haven’t you heard of this Baobob fruit? Well, it has not yet hit the mainstream market, but I’m sure Dr. Oz will be promoting it shortly after it does. (hahahaha) Though this fruit runs rapid through Africa and is praised in Egypt, Americans still

Hear No Toxins, See No Toxins, Speak No Toxins September 24, 2011

 

 

This morning I was driving in my car to bring someone some tasty raw treats and I was listening to my favorite musical piece, Beethoven’s 9th symphony. It got me to thinking about the music culture of today. There is absolutely no comparison.

When listening to works by Beethoven I think about how genius it is, and how it could actually be possible for one man to create such beauty. You can feel the passion behind each and every note as it blossoms out of the beautiful instruments. When the opera singers key in and bring together the entire piece, it almost brings tears to my eyes. I began to think what an excellent role model this man would be.

Today’s mainstream music is produced on a computer with not one person touching an instrument. The computer does everything. The lyrics of the music are enough to make a person sick, with every other word being a cuss word, a made up word, an unfinished word, or a sexual reference.

Our society went from looking up to people like Beethoven and Chopin to looking up to half naked people grabbing their private parts singing about sex and drugs. There should not be a wonder of why our society is the way it is, and why the youth of today is so vulgar with a lack of education, and a lack of wanting to thrive for one.

As the years pass it seems that the people our society praises just gets worse and worse. There are no more philosophers of today, there are no Albert Einstein’s or Rudolph Steiner’s, just vulgarity. It saddens me to see where this may lead. The youth of today are our rulers of the future. I know I would much rather have a Rudolph Steiner who listens to Bach be in charge than a person who cheated through school listening to vulgar music.

This entry may not be about physical health like my others, but this is about mental health and your ability to refuse to let the vulgarity continue. In order to become enlightened we must first clear all the dirt from our bodies and minds. Toxins are not limited to the foods we consume. Toxins are found in what we read, what we listen to, and what we see. Don’t just clean up your diet, clean up your mind.

 

 

 

The Importance of DHA!!!! September 24, 2011

Omega 3s are widely being talked about. Finally, the importance of the substance is being addressed. Many people hear mostly about it here and there, being good for the heart and the blood. But Omega 3’s are for so much more, and it is most vital that we have them. Before I get into their importance, I would like to first address the 3 main types of Omega 3’s available, to ensure you know the difference.

a-linolenic acid- (ALA)   is a form of omega 3 found mostly in plant based foods such as Hemp seeds and flax seeds.  These are short chain fatty acids, and in order for the brain to use them they must be converted into long chain. Most people cannot make this conversion.

 

 

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-  is a precursor to DHA. It is found in mostly animal products such as fish. It is a short chain

Docosahexaeonic acid (DHA)-  is a long chain fatty acid that is most needed by the human body (along with EPA) This is what the majority of people are lacking and need. It plays an important role in signal transmission in the brain and nervous system. It is also important for the eyes… they are made of DHA! fatty acid and can be used by the brain.
Soooo what’s the big deal about omega 3’s? Well, first, as most of us hear they are great for the heart. Many studies have been done with EPA and DHA with cardiovascular disease and it has been shown that both play a major role in preventative care.  Most of these studies have shown that supplementation of DHA/EPA have significantly lowered high triglycerides (by 45%) and VLDL (by more than 50%).

Have bad eyesight? YOUR EYES ARE MADE OF DHA!

Brain function!! DHA plays a major role in brain function! Many people who have struggled with ADD/ADHD symptoms most of their life and have added DHA supplementation to their diet claim to have much better concentration and symptoms of the said above completely diminishing .

Your brain needs DHA for proper function.  If you are struggling with poor memory or other cognitive skills I would highly suggest a DHA supplement.

So where do we get out DHA from? Most people will tell you from fish/fish oil/krill oil. Fish oil his highly contaminated. With our polluted waters I would consider it dangerous and not worth it to put any kind of fish product into your body, especially on a daily basis. Fish oil is also not highly absorbable by the human body. You are going to need around 3g of fish oil per day to receive desired effects.

Lower on the food chain fall the krill. There are more krill on the planet than there are ants! Krill are tiny shrimp like organisms that live in algae. Krill are much cleaner and more absorbable by the human body, with an average dose of 1g per day for effective results.

Fish and krill DO NOT ACTUALLY PRODUCE DHA! So where do they get it? Well, the fish feed on the krill, and the krill feed on marine phytoplankton. The phytoplankton is the main source of the DHA. When it comes to DHA you want the cleanest most bioavailable source, the one that is lowest on the food chain.

Marine Phytoplankton is the most bioavailable concentrated source of DHA. The average dose is only 300mg. I found an amazing product that is completely vegan called O-Mega-Zen3. After 3 days of taking this product I noticed my brain function enhance

 immensely! My memory, which I have struggled with due to past issues, has been functioning so much better! I wish I would havefound this product sooner. My father, who has been taking fish oils for years switched to this product when I informed him of my success and he made the switch to try it out. He too noticed a mega difference! The Good, The Bad, and The Salty July 27, 2011

Salt is one of the most important substances we can put in our bodies yet it is the incredibly feared by some and greatly abused by others.  It plays a major role in how our body functions, especially when it comes to cellular communication.  You do have to be careful… there are different kinds of salt: The good salt, and the bad salt.

The Bad: Table Salt

Table salt is incredibly processed and should be the salt you fear. It is 97.5% Sodium Chloride and 2.5% chemicals. This is incredibly UN NATURAL!  It is also dried at temperatures over 1200 degrees, altering the natural chemical structure of the salt. The average person consumes 4,000-10,000mg of this horrible salt per day!

When sodium chloride enters the body your cells need to break it down in order to neutralize it. In order for this to happen water molecules must surround it. The water is stolen from your cells resulting in cell death.  For every gram of sodium chloride that your body can’t get rid of it must use 23x the amount of cell water in order to get rid of it. It also will cause water to store in your tissues which causes cellulite, arthritis, gout, kidney stones, and gall stones. It also promotes edema, obesity, hypertension, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, stroke, congestive heart failure, kidney failure, PMS, and manic-depression. Americans are incredibly addicted to sodium chloride and it is causing major problems with the health of our country.

 

The Good: Mineral Salt

Salt is actually a mineral. When it is unprocessed and in its natural state that is how the body recognizes it. Mineral salt is used in all cellular communication and is important especially when it comes to hormone communication. Salt without water will not work, and water without salt will not work. They are both needed for each other. Your cells and body relies on these two substances in order to have complete communication and function.

My favorite mineral salt is Himalayan Rock Salt. When Himalayan salt is added to spring water it offers all of the natural elements exactly identical to those found in your body. It has amazing benefits for the body, such as:

  • Balancing blood sugar levels
  • Balances excess acidity in your cells—particularly brain cells
  • Helps insulin sensitivity
  • Regulates water content in body which helps to regulate kidney function and water retention
  • Where minerals go water goes—sprinkling a pinch of salt in your water will actually make your water more hydrating to your body by actually driving the water into your cells.
  • Absorbs food particles through intestinal tract

 

The Conclusion:

USE THE RIGHT SALT! I cannot stress this enough! Stay away from the bad salt and load up on the good salt! We need salt for communication and proper bodily function. If you are not putting in the good salt and you are putting in the bad salt, the body will have to grab the bad salt and try to use that, and this is when all of the problems start. Try adding a pinch of rock salt to your water during the day and see how much better you feel! I guarantee you will feel more energized and more hydrated!
